VARGKVINT
Biography
Drawing inspiration from oceans, forests and folklore, Vargkvint is the musical project of Stockholm-based artist Sofia Nystrand. Combining evocative melodies, vocals in her native Swedish, and a playful approach to arrangement and instrument usage, Vargkvint’s music falls neatly between the definitions of modern classical, folk, ambient and experimental music.
After her early works caught the attention of Nils Frahm and his manager Felix Grimm, she was invited to record a full-length album in his renowned studio in Funkhaus Berlin, together with her constant collaborator Jakob Lindhagen and Grammy-awarded engineer Antonio Pulli (The Joker, Chernobyl). The album Månens hav—inspired by the mystical and godlike entity of the moon, the technology powering the race to space, its connection to femininity and its oceans that really doesn't exist—was released on Frahms’ label Leiter Verlag in 2023.
The follow up Jorden kallar rediscovers her connection to the earth, the forest, Scandinavian folklore, and how these ideas collide with her worry for climate crisis. Once again recorded at Leiter Studio together with Lindhagen and Pulli, the album explores the realms of folk music featuring an all-female vocal quartet, and is scheduled for digital release and limited-edition eco vinyl on the 24th of April, 2026.
